CHAPTER 9

Ryan sat back in his chair, a feeling of unrest taking hold. He had entered the office before the crack of dawn that morning as sleep eluded him the night before. After talking with his sister, he had called James to make a request for more time off. Being the owner of a successful business had meant no vacation time in years for him, but the niggle of doubt he felt at making a second request in short order for James to cover the workload had caused him pause.

Drawing a deep breathe he sat forward and finished adding notes to his calendar for follow-up upon his return in a week. He made one more run through of his digital task list to ensure he hadn’t missed anything in his current muddled state. Finally satisfied he finished cleaning off his desk, and then taking two files walked down the hall to James’ office.

“Okay, here is the Waller file. I really don’t think in the next week anything major should happen on this one. This is the first draft proposal on the Hiller Distribution reorganization, and it’s not due until September first so we should be okay.”

“Got it,” James said. “Really man I can do this, besides we have the best staff money can buy.”

“I’m really sorry to do this to you again, so quickly. I just have a bit of family unresolved business I must address.”

“Ryan, you haven’t taken more than a perfunctory week off to see family when your mother demands it since we opened six years ago. It’s all good. Besides, I realize this is something you have to do for you.” He came around the desk and patted Ryan on the shoulder.

“I do appreciate it,” Ryan said sighing as he ran his hands through his short hair. He knew he needed to finally put a stake in the past and move forward, but facing it was no less disturbing to his peace of mind.

“You need to talk about anything?” James quizzed.

Ryan thought through it for a moment, “No. I think it’s just past time to,” he trailed off as he glanced down at the picture on his desk.

“I hope you find whatever it is you need to old man,” James said sympathetically not pressing further.

Ryan had provided the details of his tragic past to James early on in their relationship. While Ryan knew he could absolutely trust James, the man never pressed him for more details than he was willing to provide. It was key to their friendship.

After a pregnant pause James added, “Let me know if it looks like it will be more than a week,” James said. “My wife will begin worrying at that point.” He grinned.

“I will. Tell her I’m sorry again, about Allison.”

“Hey, it’s all good. Some people just don’t fit. So, have you told Mabel Grace or Karen that you are coming? Or is it a surprise?”

“It’s a surprise, I have another stop to make and wasn’t sure how long that one would take.
